Position Charts New Territory, Expands Role in Organ and Tissue Recovery Program

With more than 17 years of surgical experience, Mark Reintjes, MD, officially starts as full-time medical director at Midwest Transplant Network (MTN) this September. Reintjes’ position will include clinical leadership expectations and considerable surgical responsibilities in organ recovery – a position that does not exist among most organ procurement organizations (OPOs) across the country. MTN had been recruiting and interviewing candidates since its medical director relocated in March.

“The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) requires OPOs to staff a medical director position, and we viewed this opening as an opportunity to create a new position with deeper responsibilities that will ultimately advance MTN’s mission,” said Jan Finn, Midwest Transplant Network COO. “Dr. Reintjes brings clinical professionalism and surgical expertise to MTN, and he is a great fit with our organizational culture.”

Reintjes’ responsibilities as medical director will include:

·      Reviewing and approving all potential organ donors

·      Focusing on clinical organ and tissue services outcomes

·      Working closely with management and organ and tissue procurement teams on quality improvement initiatives

·      Building relationships with hospital executives and surgeons and assisting in education initiatives across MTN’s service area

·      Leading MTN’s medical and scientific advisory board committee

·      Representing MTN and serving in leadership positions at the national level on various committees and councils in the OPO, transplant and organ and tissue donation

Most recently, Reintjes was a general surgeon at Truman Medical Center and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He graduated from The University of Virginia School of Medicine in Charlottesville, Va. and completed his residency at Loyola University Medical Center just outside of Chicago.
