Right now, nearly 2,500 people in Missouri and Kansas are waiting for lifesaving organ transplants.

At Midwest Transplant Network, we want that number to be zero.

Our community has done well so far. In fact, 72% of adults in Kansas and 75% of adults in Missouri are officially registered organ and tissue donors. But the need for organ donors continues to outpace the number of registrants—so, while those numbers are good, we believe we can do better.

That’s why we are launching a comprehensive, multimedia public awareness initiative known as the Green Ribbon Campaign. Our goal: to make sure everyone in our region recognizes the green ribbon as a badge of honor representing the selfless act of becoming a registered organ donor, and the life-giving impact on those who receive transplants.

The Green Ribbon Campaign begins in April to coincide with National Donate Life Month, which means the green ribbon will be seen more and more all across our Kansas and western Missouri communities. By prominently displaying the green ribbon across media outlets, in hospitals and DMVs, and on the lapels of proud registered donors (to name just a few places), we are elevating our efforts to increase awareness and inspire people to become registered donors.

When you see the green ribbon—or beautiful, green lights on local buildings at night in April—please share with others what it stands for: giving hope and sharing life through organ donation.

Green Ribbon Campaign Kickoff Events

In April, the following events offer many opportunities for the public and/or media to get involved in building awareness:

  • April 7 – Donate Life Legacy Walk
Join Midwest Transplant Network as we host this community-wide 5K event to honor donor heroes and celebrate life.
  • April 13 – Green Ribbon Day
Green Ribbon Day (a.k.a. National Donate Life Blue & Green Day) is a special observance day commemorating the importance of organ donation. Everyone is encouraged to wear green as a sign of support and to ask friends and loved ones if they’ve joined the Organ and Tissue Donor Registry.
  • April 8-15 – Lighting it Green in Kansas City
Residents in some areas will enjoy seeing their favorite buildings or outdoor areas shine bright with the color green to honor and commemorate the generous act of organ donation. For example, Union Station, the KCP&L Building and City Hall will be lit green April 8-15.
  • Look for promotions at Kansas and Missouri hospitals and transplant centers throughout the month of April. We have provided green ribbon pins and communications materials to further support the 125,000 hospital and transplant center employees in our region. Similarly, we are distributing green ribbon awareness materials to our partners at Kansas and Missouri DMV locations.

At Midwest Transplant Network, we also host and support other community events throughout the year—visit our Event Calendar to learn more. Together with our partners, ambassadors, volunteers, donors and friends, we are inspiring action across the region to save and improve more lives. Please join us in spreading the word about the difference everyone can make by joining the Organ and Tissue Donor Registry, which takes only a few moments to complete at ShareLifeMidwest.com.
